Hamp
(May 2017)
Hamp is a play based on a Private (Private Arthur Hamp) who is put on trial for desertion during the First World War.
This particular show was performed in the round which meant that audience surrounded the entire performance space. This granted us the opportunity to have an interesting set design, with a floating roof, but also presented interesting challenges from a lighting design point of view. This was the first production I had been involved with that was in the round, this meant that I had to do research into lighting for this kind of production. Though it allowed me to generate plenty of shadows from all directions, which was ideal for the kind of production it was.
Not only was this a challenge to light due to the 360 degree viewing angle, but it was tough due to the mood of the piece. The plot sends the audience through a full range of emotions, peaking in the third act. Capturing the emotion with the lighting and supporting the action was a hard job however I believe I managed to make it look as realistic and appropriate as I could, with the limited equipment available.
